Optimal Sizing of Hybrid Vehicle Components

Abstract:
In the literature, component ratings for series hybrid electric vehicles are determined; using power requirement for acceleration, gradeability and cruising conditions and energy requirement for the pre-defined all-electric-range of the vehicle. Gear ratio is found using the relation between the maximum desired vehicle speed, tire size and maximum electric motor speed. Hence, these methods which make use of generic formulas are far from being vehicle specific and thus result in higher component ratings than actually required.

In this paper a new approach is presented, which indicates that a less costly solution can meet the specifications. To illustrate the method, first a model for a commercial vehicle is developed. Its accuracy is illustrated by comparing predicted performance with measurements. In the proposed method, the target hybrid vehicle is run on the NEDC drive with its estimated mass. Afterwards, power and energy requirement analyses are made at the wheel of the vehicle. This information is used to determine the ratings of each of the traction components of the hybrid vehicle; such as electric motor maximum and continuous power, required usable battery energy capacity etc. This paper also presents a sensitivity analysis to observe the effect of various parameters on vehicle performance.

The ultimate aim of this study is to use the approach proposed, to develop an optimized hybrid vehicle design procedure, which aims to return the cost of a hybrid vehicle, in the shortest possible time. This paper also discusses, optimization variables and constraints that can be used in the optimization stage.
